Do you think much about turtles and tortoises? You probably don’t unless you see one on TV or if you read about one online. However, there are days when you should think about these reptiles and give them the respect they need. That should be every day, but there is one day in particular where you should, which is on World Turtle Day.
May 23rd is the day to think about the turtles and tortoises worldwide as World Turtle Day. Turtles are a sea-dwelling reptile that dates back to the Middle Jurrasic times as they are one of the oldest reptiles as they are even older than crocodiles and snakes. There are some breeds of turtles that are quite endangered, so they need special attention. If you are unsure of the difference between tortoises and turtles, the main difference is that tortoises live on land and turtles live in the water, but they are very similar otherwise.
Both turtles and tortoises have a shell that keeps them protected, and if they are in danger, they retract their necks into their shells as that keeps them safe. They are both harmless unless they feel threatened. If you don’t bother them, they will not bother you either. Some tortoises can live over 150 years, making them one of the oldest living species worldwide.
Some people have turtles as pets, as long as they are small. The ones that are popular as pets are the red-eared sliders, spur-thighed tortoises, and Russian tortoises. However, the day is not to commemorate only pet turtles and tortoises, as it is the day to acknowledge the endangered ones.
The History Of World Turtle Day
Animal Tortoise Rescue that was founded in 1990 is an organization that rescues turtles and tortoises as the organization was established by the husband and wife team, Susan Tellem and Marshall Thompson. The couple reduced over 3,000 turtles and tortoises. Then in 2000, Animal Tortoise Rescue established World Turtle Day to provide awareness about the vulnerability of turtles and tortoises and to also reach out for support. Since then, there have been activities worldwide to commemorate these special reptiles on that day in schools, zoos, and aquariums. There is no clear reason as to why May 23rd was the day chosen, however.
How To Celebrate World Turtle Day
You can donate to any turtle organization such as Animal Tortoise Rescue, and you can also take time to learn something about turtles and tortoises. However you do it, post it on social media by using #WorldTurtleDay in the post.
