Social media is a big part of people’s lives as that is the best way to connect with others since people are so busy otherwise as they don’t have the time to visit them. There are so many other things you can do with social media as well, and there is a day to celebrate it all, which is Social Media Day.

June 30th is the day to go on various social platforms as it is Social Media Day. Back in the 1990s, there were no real social media even though the internet became popular. Therefore, the only way to interact with people online was through chatlines as well as forums. You still had to subscribe to a traditional newspaper, and if you wanted to watch a video, you had to watch TV. Social media was not a thing until the early 2000s.

YouTube was one of the first platforms that came out in 2002, and that was when you could begin watching videos online and interacting with other commenters. However, at that point, videos were limited. Then MySpace was the next thing that did not come out too long after YouTube, which was the real introduction to the social media world. Then Facebook took over that, Twitter came out, then Instagram, and now TikTok is popular.

Social media can be helpful but also harmful depending on how you use it. You could use it to learn different recipes and find some entertainment, stay in touch with your friends, or engage in some dangerous conspiracy theories that are problematic for obvious reasons. Social media is a tool, but it all depends on how you use it.

The History Of Social Media Day

On June 30th, 2010, Mashable established Social Media Day. At that time, the social media measuring metric, Klout, was popular, and it is a possibility that it has something to do with the establishment of the day. The higher your social media usage and engagement was, the better your Klout score which got you plenty of fabulous freebies and even tickets to movies. However, it was a day to commemorate the new and revolutionary ways to interact with others worldwide. There has to be a day to celebrate that because you could not communicate with your friends and family otherwise in the past. You are now always connected to them!

How To Celebrate Social Media Day

You can always join a new platform and keep posting, or, if not, why don’t you go on social media and talk about what you love and hate about it. You will create a long discussion! When you post, don’t forget to add #SocialMediaDay to it.
