Save The Frogs Day

Does the idea of images of frogs come to your mind? There is a day in the year when you do need to pay attention to frogs and the crucial role they play in our ecosystem. That day to acknowledge the magic that frogs create is known as Save The Frogs Day.

April 24th of this year or the last Saturday of every year is Save The Frogs Day. You can find frogs worldwide, and they have been around for ages which date back to the Triassic period. That is a very long time ago, and their role is that they eat insects. Frogs don’t get the recognition they deserve because they eat mosquitos, which means fewer opportunities for mosquitoes to pass viruses onto us, such as Zika or West Nile.

As a matter of fact, frogs eat them before they turn into mosquitos as a large part of their diet consists of larvae of mosquitos. Therefore, the fewer of those blood-suckers around to spread illness and disease, the better. You may think that frogs and toads are interchangeable. However, there is a big difference as toads live on dry land and frogs need to live in moist areas or swampy areas because their skin is semi-permeable. That allows grass and water to easily pass through it. Not to mention, frogs sound cute as they vocalize sounds often.

However, the point of the day is to remember that frogs are an endangered species and need protection as their population has been dwindling since the 1950s.

History Of Save The Frogs Day

As mentioned, the population of frogs has dwindled since the 1950s, and since the 1980s, they are quickly disappearing from the world, which is why finding frogs is a rare find. If fewer frogs are around, then that means more disease spreading as mosquitoes, their food, is what spreads dangerous viruses. Don’t forget there is also dengue and malaria. It is not known as to why the last Saturday of April is assigned to be Save The Frogs Day. However, the day is here to spread awareness about how to keep these creatures safe from disappearing altogether as we need frogs as they are crucial to the ecosystem.
