National Military Spouse Appreciation Day

When you think about the military and the sacrifices they make, you will think about them and the veterans. However, what about their spouses? You may not even consider the sacrifices that military spouses make, so there is a day to celebrate them. That day is National Military Spouse Appreciation Day.

May 7th, or the Friday before Mother’s Day, is the day to celebrate military spouses as it is National Military Spouse Appreciation Day. That is the day to remember the honors and commitments that these spouses also make so their partners can defend the country and make their own sacrifices by being in the military. Military spouses do not have order in their lives as they are often moving around to different countries based on their partner’s situation. You will even have to think about the spouses with young children who are left alone, often caring for them. If the spouses are left alone, they do not see their partners in the military for extended periods because they are fighting for the country while the spouses are caring for the home and the children.

Parenthood is difficult as it is when the military is not even in the equation. The spouses will constantly face the stress of caring for children and managing the home alone, but they also do not know if or when their spouses will return, and that is a scary thought. Therefore, these partners of soldiers or anyone in the military face so much more upheavals and unknowns than so many others.

The History Of National Military Spouse Appreciation Day

Former president Ronald Reagan in 1984 realized that there was significant importance of spousal commitment to the wellbeing and readiness of members of the military. That was with the Proclamation 5184, which was given the date of April 17th, 1984. Therefore, the Congress established Military Spouse Appreciation Day, which was the month for appreciating the military in 1999. Consequently, it was declared that Military Spouse Appreciation Day would fall on the Friday before Mother’s Day, which the Department of Defence established. That is the day to show appreciation to military spouses and to honor them for the sacrifices they make.

How To Acknowledge National Military Spouse Appreciation Day

There are so many ways to celebrate the day. If you are in the military, do chores for your spouse and allow them to pamper themselves. If not, you can look for virtual events that celebrate military spouses such as games and other celebrations. If you know one, get them a coffee or buy them lunch. If you want to share what you do to celebrate the day, be sure to add #NationalMilitarySpouseAppreciationDay to the post on social media.
