National Hug Your Dog Day

April 10 is the National Hug Your Dog Day, and if you have a dog, this might be another day at home for you. Seriously, man’s best friend should get more recognition — here’s what you need to know about this wide-eyed and bushy-tailed day.

Here’s the deal. April 10 is National Hug Your Dog Day, but there are two sides to every story.

Let’s start with our furry friends. Your dog is happy to hug you as long as you let him be. Studies have shown that dogs display being happier when seeing their owners from all stimuli, including food and toys.

Then we have people. You might probably already know this, but hugs are healing. Literally, when you hug your dog, or any other person, for that matter, your levels of stress hormones decrease. It’s your brain releasing oxytocin, the feel-good hormone, and that can even lower your blood pressure, so it’s quite healthy!

The National Hug Day is a day to be part of dog shows, take your dog for a walk or just stay at home with your best friend.

There’s a big chance your local pet shops and vet clinics have something planned for you and your four-legged best friend. Get involved, really! Take the day off and dedicate it to the relationship with your dog!

This is a time for learning too. Lectures, demonstrations and workshops to learn how to better take care of your dog are often advertised around this special day. In the same way, no one knows how to raise a kid; we don’t really know how to take care of our pets, even when we think we do. There’s always something new to learn about dogs’ particular needs.

Enjoy this friendly holiday with your dog and repeat as often as you can!

History of National Hug Your Dog Day

We can all thank Ami Moore, a dog specialist, published author and canine behaviorist, for creating the National Hug Your Dog Day. According to the author, the day was founded to remind people to bond with their dogs.

Also trained as a Native American Medicine Woman, it’s easy to see why Amy is called “The Dog Whisperer of Chicago.” Her appreciation for dogs is inspiring, and the National Hug Your Dog Day is proof of it. If people take care of their dogs, the pups will take care of their owners.

Hug your dog for your health, for your dog’s health, and your overall happiness. Unless you’re a cat person, you’ll surely enjoy this unique holiday. Make sure you take some time to make sure your dog has all it needs; a new bed or a new toy can definitely help — yes, you’re supposed to give your dog a gift too!

How to Celebrate National Hug Your Dog Day

For starters, spend some quality time with your dog, which can be throwing the ball for a while or going on a walk around the block. Every dog is different, but we’re sure you already know how to pamper yours!
