6 March National Dentist’s Day

You need to see your doctor to check that your body is healthy the same way you need the dentist to ensure your teeth and gums are in good shape. Brushing your teeth and flossing alone won’t keep you from having your teeth checked by the dentist. How often do you get checked by the dentist? Today is national dentist’s day so let’s talk about that.

March 6th urges you to pay attention to your oral health as it is national dentist’s day. If you recently went to the dentist for a cleaning and examination, then you are in great shape – especially if your teeth and gums are in excellent condition. However, the problem is that many people forgo going to the dentist for a variety of reasons. Maybe they don’t want to find the time to go since they have other responsibilities to take care of, but that is not a reason to skip going to the dentist. Some people might be afraid of going to the dentist, as maybe they had a terrible experience with one years ago.

However, the matter is that people must go to their dental appointments regularly. Even if they brush their teeth twice a day religiously and make it a habit of flossing, sure, their teeth are likely in great shape, but that does not take away the fact that their teeth and gums need further cleaning and examination. That is no different from going to the doctor once a year for a checkup, even if you take excellent care of your health. There could always be underlying issues that you may not know about your oral health the same way that there may be underlying issues with your physical health – even if you take good care of them.

History Of National Dentist’s Day

There is still some uncertainty as to what is behind the establishment of national dentist’s day. However, there is the belief that on March 6th, 1790, a late American dentist named John Greenwood was the one who checked the late American President George Washington’s teeth. Greenwood was also the one who invented the dental foot engine that was the first known one. That is likely how the national holiday began. And it is a great one because, over time, dentists started coming to schools to teach kids the importance of proper dental hygiene, and kids from a young age need to understand that. If your dental health is good, then it helps keep your physical health in good shape.

How To Acknowledge National Dentist’s Day

Sure, you want to give your teeth a good brushing and flossing on this day, but you want to do that every day. Why not call and make an appointment with your dentist if you have not done so already? Or, if you have done that, learn something new about dental health by doing some research. Why not share what you did on this day by using #NationalDentistDay on social media.
