June Holidays

When you think of gorgeous bouquets, fresh fruits and vegetables, and sunshine, you can envision the month of June. June is the sixth month of the year, and the month was likely named after the Roman goddess Juno, the wife of Jupiter. Juno represented the wellbeing of women and was the patroness of marriage. There is also the belief that the name June came from the Latin ‘juevnis’, which means young people. For a long time, young people were celebrated in June.

Another possibility of the name behind June was that the month was named after Lucius Junius Brutus, the Roman Republic founder. He was also the ancestor of the Roman gens Junia.

Fun Facts About June

The one thing that people think of June is that it is the start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere and winter in the Northern Hemisphere. Therefore, the longest day of the year happens during the summer solstice in June, and the shortest day of the year occurs in the Southern Hemisphere. In addition to that, in the Northern Hemisphere, June 24th is Midsummer Day where it is the middle of the growing season. That is the time that marks between planting and harvesting.

A new fun fact about June that started in 2020 was that June 19th is Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day. In 1865, slaves were liberated in Texas on that day. Every year on June 19th, there will be an observation of that day in the USA.

June has always been the hottest time for weddings, and it is meant to be something special to be a June bride. It may have something to do because Juno was the goddess of marriage, and the full moon in late June is known as the Honey Moon. Perhaps that is why the trip you take after getting married is called the honeymoon.

In 2009, June was one of the most popular names for girls in the USA. The name June ranked within the top 1,000 names for girls, as it ranked at 662 consistently.
