International Safety Pin Day

How do you fasten up two pieces of clothing by ensuring your safety besides using thread? You don’t always want to use thread to fasten fabric up if it is temporary. That is one of the many reasons that people use safety pins. There are many reasons to celebrate these smart tools on International Safety Pin Day.

April 10th is the day to celebrate these pins as it is International Safety Pin Day. The safety pin is a regular pin that has a clasp and a straightforward spring mechanism. The clasp does two things as it helps create a closed-loop for fastening the pin and keeping the pin covered as it serves protection from the pin’s sharp point. They attach fabric pieces and have been known to close cloth diapers or nappies. Therefore, the clasp protects the babies from being pricked by the pin.

The other uses for safety pins involve first aid as you need safety pins to hold bandages and wraps together, which is why you see safety pins in first aid kits. Not to mention, you will also need safety pins if you are creating a survival kit in case a disaster were to strike in your area. However, you can use safety pins for fishing and once again for first aid.

Let’s now look at how to use safety pins for creative or DIY purposes. You can make jewelry out of safety pins as you can make some stylish bracelets and necklaces. You can even make earrings out of safety pins as the sky is the limit with what you can do!

The History Of International Safety Pin Day

Walter Hunt was the one who invented the safety pin and in 1849, Hunt received a patent on April 10th of that year. Rumors are saying that he invented the safety pin after needing to pay the debt, which was $15, but that is the equivalent of $400 today. He only had three hours to come up with the money. Therefore, he did it, and not only did he have the safety pin patented, but he sold it for $154, which was equivalent to several thousand dollars today. He was able to pay off his debt which was a miracle for him. Little did he know, safety pins have so many great uses for today.
