International Mud Day

When you think of mud, you think of what a nuisance and what an annoyance it is! Think about it, when it rains on dirt, it creates mud. When it snows on dirt, and after it melts, it also creates mud, making a big mess. However, there are reasons to look more into it other than the fact it is a nuisance, which will show on International Mud Day.

June 29th is the day to acknowledge that mud can be a nuisance and can be helpful in its way as it is International Mud Day. Sure, after it rains on dirt or the snow melts off of it, you have a lot of mud. If you have young kids and they walk or play in it, that can create a dirty home and a lot of time to clean it and bathing the kids. The same goes if you have a dog, as the dog will run around in the mud and then track it into the home with its dirty paws. That is why mud is such an annoyance. However, there are benefits of it as well.

Mud has plenty of germs because it is moistened soil that has bacteria. Most of it is harmless, especially if there is no ingestion of it. If the mud is exposed to the skin, the germs are in contact with the skin. In that case, the immune system revs up and then fights off the germs. That is how the immune system strengthens to fight off other serious ailments such as the flu or other viruses. Mud is our foe and friend.

The History Of International Mud Day

The ones who established International Mud Day wanted kids to feel closer together, and in 2009, that is when the day began with a World Forum event. Bishnu Bhatta from Nepal and Gillian McAuliffe from Australia spoke with one another about how they can promote feelings of a community and the appreciation for the world that we know. After that, educators, kids, and other families worldwide chimed in and thought that there should be a day for kids to play in the mud. Therefore, that is how the national day began.
