December Holidays

When you think of Christmas and New Year’s Eve, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? The month of December, of course. That is the month of the holidays that take us away from the harsh realities of life. December is the 12th or final month of the year.

However, during ancient Roman times, December was the tenth and final month as, at that time, there was only a ten-month calendar. It only had 30 days as well back then. The name derived from the Latin word, ‘decem’ which means ten. Then when January and February were added to the calendar, then it became the 12th month.

December is also the start of the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, and the start of the summer solstice in the Southern Hemisphere. Now let’s talk about some fun December facts.

Fun Facts About December

Russia and the Baltic countries were no considered part of the Soviet Union or the Union of the Societ Socialist Republics on December 8th, 1991. That was the day that the USSR dissolved and those countries became independent.

December 15th, 1791 was when the Bill of Rights came into the USA. It was included in the first ten amendments of the Constitution. These are what keeps the government and US society up and running.

December 28th has been known to be the unluckiest day of the year for millennia. It came from a Christian belief until recently. However, for the longest time, no one wanted to travel, start work, or start anything new, or buy anything large or small on that date.

On December 21st, 1846, anesthesia was first used in a British hospital. Dr. Robert Lston at the University of College Hospital in London used it on a patient undergoing surgery.
