Amnesty International Day

You would never want to deny anyone of their human rights, and human rights has been one of the hottest topics when it comes to international politics. There is one establishment that has been trying to help the world to become a better place, and you will want to commemorate that on Amnesty International Day.

May 28th is the day to focus on human rights as it is Amnesty International Day. Human rights come in all forms and that can range from stopping child labor and other abuses to you having the right to date and marry who you want. When there is too much oppression, that makes the world cold and unlivable. Amnesty International has the purpose of helping to promote human rights which will, in the end, make the world a better place for everyone.

Not only does this day work to promote human rights but it is also the day to shed light on various abuse that happens where it should never happen. For instance, child labor should not exist at all, as these kids are exploited and treated very badly among workers. Other people feel oppressed and are treated poorly based on their race, religion, abilities, age, and sexual orientation. Amnesty International helps to put a stop to that. Even though there is still a lot of work to be done to promote human rights when it comes to those oppressed, a lot of progress has come a long way over time as well it. Let’s go into more about Amnesty International’s history.

The History Of Amnesty International Day

The establishment of Amnesty International started in July 1961 in London, UK. The reason for the establishment goes back to the same year. An English labor lawyer, Peter Benenson was the one who wanted to start this program after discovering the unfair imprisonment of two Portuguese students that lasted for seven years all because they were drinking a toast to freedom. Benenson worked with writers, religious leaders, lawyers, and academics and wrote an article known as The Forgotten Prisoners in the Observer in May of 1961. Therefore, an appeal happened and that ended up quickly becoming the organization that would work to make positive changes for human rights worldwide.
